2011… a year with plenty of Scoop(s)

In a wavering European economy there are still stations that go for broke (hopefully not literally) and invest in on-air imaging. Radio Scoop, a popular CHR in the south-east of France, has upped their game in terms of using jingles.

Radio Scoop wants to play a broad variety of jingles and stay on top of music trends. The producers at PURE Jingles got a chance to start cranking out another 10 jingle themes, less than 6 months after they finished producing the Radio Scoop Spring 2011 package.

Guitars
This time around PURE’s creative team was happy to dust off the guitars for a couple of jingles and they listened heavily to the mixing styles of producers like The Smeezingtons, Swedish House Mafia and Rizzle Kicks.

Apart from the 10 cuts that are now playing on Radio Scoop, the station also received another bunch of Power Intros. Visit the PURE website to hear them, and play around with the jingles in the PURE JingleMixer: www.purejingles.com/individual.

The Lincs FM Group is split into 2 networks ‘Hits & Memories’ and the Lite AC ‘Memories’ with 2 custom packages to cover each set of stations.

The Audio Sweets iD team created 14 themes in total that resulted in 2 packages with over 1300 mix outs across the group. And this is only the start of their jingle journey, as the package grows with updates every quarter.

Warren Miller, Programme Director of the 5 ‘Hits’ stations said: “From start to finish they made us feel like one of the family! Nothing is too much trouble and the product at the end blew us away”

In addition to the 2 main packages the group has unlimited access to the online AudioSweets’ Sweet Shop, which provides stations with a fresh and constantly updated imaging toolkit with beds, sound design, shells and more.

Richard Lyon, Programme Manager of the 3 ‘Memories’ stations commented: “From the very beginning of our relationship with AudioSweets the team have really understood what we wanted from our new imaging. They’ve created jingles that really stand out! For the first time we have all the production we need, all from one place”

Simon Prentice, AudioSweets MD added, “We create imaging that stands up to today’s playlists but also provides the station will tools to create some sweet sounding radio. The 2 packages have quite different sounds but with an overall feeling that they are from the same family. We look forward to working on an ongoing basis with them as the package
evolves and grows.”

The Lincs FM Group packages join recent customs for CityBeat, the KMFM network and HiFM from the freshly launched AudioSweets ID, which is produced by the team behind the successful Sweet Factory – AudioSweets huge pick and mix imaging site, used by over 40 stations in the UK and over 100 across the world.

Both the Lincs packages are available to be resung outside the UK so let AudioSweets ID trick out your station – email simon@audiosweets.com or call +44 (0)1538 370 160

JAM Celebrates 40 Years

November 22, 2014 marked the 40th anniversary of JAM Creative Productions, Inc. JAM has specialized in making ID jingles for radio stations since its inception, and has operated under its original name, ownership and creative direction longer than any other company of its type in the history of broadcasting.

For 40 years:
The same name.
The same owners.
The same dedication to making the best jingles on the air, working with some of the most talented people in the world.
No other company in the history of broadcasting can say all that.
Today we can, because of you.

Thanks for 40 amazing years.

From Jon And Mary Lyn, and all your friends at JAM.

Jonathan and Mary Lyn Wolfert founded the company in 1974 and continue to own the business and operate it on a daily basis. (The name JAM is an acronym for “Jon And Mary Lyn”). Although the couple started by working out of their apartment, the business quickly grew into a suite of offices, then a studio, and ultimately a custom building with offices and two spacious recording studios.

During the past 40 years JAM jingles have been used by legendary stations around the world. Jon Wolfert says, “All of our clients are important to us, and it’s difficult to pick favorites. But, as someone who grew up in New York, I’m amazed that a young couple who heard our work on WABC in the mid-70s could have had children who heard us on Z-100 in the 80s, and grandkids who are hearing us on WCBS-FM and WFAN today.

We’re constantly adapting to keep things fresh, but we don’t lose sight of what works when it comes to creating a station’s image. That’s one reason why all of those different generations often remember, and can probably sing the names of, the stations they grew up with.”

There are thousands of other stations who have used JAM jingles. In addition, JAM has also created themes for dozens of syndicated shows ranging from AT-40 to the brand new Scott Shannon show “America’s Greatest Hits”. We’ve done work for TV networks, movies and over 23,000 jingle packages for stations of every format located all over the world. And yes, we have copies of them all… it’s the ultimate jingle collection!

The quality has remained consistent because most key production and sales personnel have been with JAM since the ‘70s or ‘80s. That includes Randy Bell, Mark Holland, Brian Hamilton and Cary Bass. There are also singers, musicians and writers who have been along for the entire ride, and others who have come to JAM more recently.

Wolfert says “We know more about jingles than anyone, and we know our own history. So JAM takes pride in being able to guide clients to the best jingles for their needs from our huge library. For example, it might be a recent package like ‘New & Now’ for a bright A-C, or a legendary sound from the 80s like ‘The Flame Thrower’ for a Classic Hits format. But whatever we do, it has the full sound that comes from using highly talented vocalists and live musicians- not just computers with plug-ins.“

Getting into jingle production was something Wolfert always wanted to do. Jon says, “I’ve been interested in radio, music and production since I was a kid, and got hooked on radio jingles early on because they combine all of those.” He moved to Dallas in 1971 when he was hired at the legendary PAMS Productions. “It was great to work for a place I had long admired and be able to learn from some of the best. But after a few years I wanted to do things my own way, and I left to start JAM.” It came full circle in 1990 when JAM bought what remained of PAMS, which included the copyrights and original master tapes. The PAMS packages are still in demand today, particularly by stations playing music from the 60s and 70s. For example, the “decades channels” on SiriusXM Satellite Radio use era-appropriate jingles from PAMS and JAM.

Wolfert has been asked whether he thought that JAM would make it to the 40-year mark when the company began. Jon says, “We never really thought about that. We’ve always been too busy dealing with one project, and one deadline, at a time. The funny thing is that when some new clients hear about our amazing history they expect me to be 103 years old. When we started JAM I was only 22. You can do the math.”

JAM appreciates the congratulatory messages they’ve been receiving. Clients and friends are invited to visit teir website at jingles.com or check in on their Facebook page.

Dom Nero confirmed for The Imaging Days 2015

He’s been holding down the imaging gig at Hot 97 in New York City for the last 10 years and now he has been confirmed for The Imaging Days 2015: Dom Nero!

Although having been at Hot 97 in New York for over 10 years, Dom is originally from Toronto, Canada. Like most who have worked in radio, Dom caught the bug at an early age. His love for music put him on the path to being a nightclub DJ when he was 15. This was right around the same time he noticed he enjoyed listening to a radio station’s imaging as much as the music. The following year, Dom was lucky enough to land an interning gig at Hits 103.5 (Z103.5 today).
From there, Dom went on to study Radio Broadcasting at Seneca College. Although the program covered all areas of radio, Dom was really only interested in one… Imaging. While in college, Dom worked part-time at 104.5CHUM FM and landed a full-time position at Y108 shortly thereafter as the Morning Show/Imaging Producer. By this time, Dom had already started working as a freelancer for some U.S. radio stations and also headed back to Seneca College… not as a student this time, but as the Radio Imaging Professor. After a year and a half of teaching, Dom was offered the Imaging position at Hot97 in NYC. Emmis owned three stations in the cluster at that time. Three years after solely imaging Hot, Dom was asked to also image the Urban AC station 98.7 Kiss FM. Shortly after, Dom was asked to image the Rock station in the cluster and was offered the position of CSD New York for Emmis.

Dom Nero is the fifth speaker to be announced for The Imaging Days 2015: the only radioimaging event in the world. Other elite speakers and talent who will perform at The Imaging Days 2015: Kelly Doherty (VP of Imaging iHeartMedia), Chris Hartgers (Radio 538/SLAM!FM), John Frost (FrostBytes) and Niels Franken (Radio 538). In the following weeks more names will be announced. After the huge success of the first edition, this year the world of radio imaging “becomes one” on the 5th and 6th of October in De Lichtfabriek in Haarlem (the Netherlands).

New AC Jingle Package for LiteFavourites.com

LFM Audio, creator of reasonably priced sung radio jingles and radio imaging, has produced a new jingle package for LifeFavourites.com.

The package consists of four ramps/acapella/slogan sung radio jingles. They are available for resing worldwide. The package presents an attractive alternative, in financial terms, for radio stations that want original jingles but do not want the expense of creating and recording jingles from scratch.

“Our client wanted something with a ‘wow’ sound that fits their soft adult contemporary radio station,” said Ethan Lessiter, Producer at LFM Audio. “The challenge was to create a set of jingles that packed a lot of punch for the initial use, but which could be resung later and retain their original sparkle.”

LFM composed, recorded, sung, produced and mastered the complete jingle package from scratch. The creative team live-recorded many of the instruments, including drums, guitars and brass. The package was composed by Igor Smelov, who also performed some of the instrumentals. Lessiter produced the package.

Client reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. “It was perfectly priced,” said the client. “I have purchased many jingles over the years, from many different companies, but was never able to afford my own CUSTOM jingles… built exactly for MY radio station — until now! The crew at LFM Audio put my ideas to music. I highly recommend them. I’m already planning my next package.”

LFM Audio is offering Resung Jingle Packages from just $629USD. Check out lfmaudio.com for more!

Magic-al re-sing for Malaysia’s Lite FM

Malaysia’s national network Lite FM has launched a re-sing of Wise Buddah’s Magic 105.4 jingle package.

Commissioned by the Bauer Media Group, the original package was recorded with an orchestra conducted under the baton of Cliff Masterson (Kylie Minogue, Little Mix, Emeli Sandé) and launched in the UK following Magic’s growth to a national network in 2015. This latest version follows the recent re-sings of the package in the USA and Canada.

Phil Tozer, Production Manager, Wise Buddah Jingles: “When Lite FM came to us they asked for a package which would fit seamlessly alongside a playlist packed with artists from Whitney and Madonna to Adele and Sam Smith. Aaron and the Team took one listen to the package we produced for Magic and they knew it was a perfect fit for their station; they play nothing but laid back, relaxing hits from iconic artists from the 80s to today.”

Aaron Pinto, Network Content Manager for Astro Radio added: “We wanted a jingle package that captured the warmth of the music we play but yet not sound old. Dealing with Wise Buddah was simple – we gave the basic parameters of what we wanted and they delivered the package – brilliant production, great singing and an amazing sonic logo! Working with you guys has confirmed that everything is possible!”

Orion Media has returned to Wise Buddah once again, as Gem 106 refreshes its brand position.

Wise Buddah has produced a Custom ID package, which includes a new 3-note sonic identity alongside the new strapline for Gem, ‘Playing music you love’.

James Brownlow, Program Director, Gem: “The creative package which Wise Buddah produced was totally on point with our brief and of the highest quality. Our feedback was always accommodated – and the results often surpassed expectation. The final imaging is trailblazing – and in keeping with the ever more contemporary tastes of the Gem audience. I have no doubt that envious ears will be listening here in the UK and beyond! It’s been a true pleasure working with the Wise Buddah team, and I look forward to doing so again.”

Wise Buddah has recently completed new packages for BIG 949 (USA), Lite FM (Malaysia), Antenne Bayern (Germany) and NPO Radio 2 (Holland). Paul Plant, Managing Director, Wise Buddah Jingles, said: “When David Lloyd told us the news, it gave us the chance to get our creative juices flowing again with the production team at Orion. We’ve used session singers who have never been heard before in the UK, which we hope gives the package a unique identity in their commercial radio market place.”

Writing is arguably one of the most important processes in creating Radio Imaging and Creative Audio. Can you imagine your favourite Movie or TV Show with a bad script? You are more than likely not going to stick around and it get a negative reaction from the viewer and they won’t watch it again.

It’s the very same for your Radio Station, if you have poor content and scripts, the listener will just switch stations with the risk of never coming back. You really need to hit the listener each time with gold material to hook them in and keep them where you want them.

What not to do?

It’s very easy to leave scripting on the backburner or just copying another Radio Station – but that won’t win, it’s been done, it’s not original and might not resonate with your listener as well as you may have thought.

What to do?

Set scripting time every week before the session with your Station Voiceover – you could get ideas while you are walking your dog on a hot summer’s day, watching a movie or TV Show or even a pub chat – some of the best conversations begin in the pub!

Be topical and stay current (particularly if you are a CHR/Hot AC Radio Station) and use the stuff your listener is interested in. One of my favourite pieces of work was a promo for our JNLR Ratings back in February.

The promo was based around Donald Trump and fake news – Donald Trump was everywhere in the news and literally everywhere you turned – so I turned it on it’s head and related it to the Listenership figures and used references to the locality (being Dublin)

Hear the promo at 0:34 below…

Using references to big topical stories is the best way to stay relevant with a bit of humour on the side.

Keep it short

Listener’s attention spans are getting shorter (particularly the younger people) so writing shorter and more to the point scripts are better. Make that 30 second promo, 20 seconds or even 10 seconds if you can!

It’s also important to keep those S&P Tags to a minimum too – yeah the client is paying for the mention but would they rather the promo be heard or the listener to tune out? I think you will find they want them to stay listening if they are paying – so meeting clients and informing Sales Reps about this is also key.

Below is an example of how you can change your scripting by changing the order and filter out the rubbish.

Original: We have your chance to see The Chainsmokers in New York. We will fly you and your mate, business class for seven nights to see them live in Madison Square Garden

Revised: Get qualified all week….. And you’ll fly to New York with your mate…. To see The Chainsmokers!

Remove Stop Words

Stop words are words like “a, about, above, across, after, afterwards, again, all, also, always etc..”

Stop words are described as “words which do not contain important significance to be used in Search Queries. Usually these words are filtered out from search queries because they return vast amount of unnecessary information.”

I am a firm believer in leaving out stop words and words that do not add any value to a script – they just take up air time. Imagine how much airtime you could get back by removing stop words in all scripts?

Two of radio’s most unique creative forces, Splat! Radio Imaging and Sound Freqz Sound Design, have announced the launch of a new co-branded project – Splat!Freqz Audio Production FX.

Splat!Freqz is a 125 track buyout FX package produced by renowned sound designer Joe D’Agostin and shaped to the specifications of radio producers who demand easy to use, high-impact, sonically superior audio effects. Logically designed and structured, Splat!Freqz integrates seamlessly with CHR, Urban, Rock, Talk, Sports, Alternative and any format that requires functional, highly creative production sounds.

Industry buzz for Splat!Freqz has been instant, and it’s already on the air and making an impact at stations including Hot 97 New York, CHUM-FM Toronto and WMMR/WMGK Philadelphia.

WMMR’s Imaging Director, Tony Maddox, praises Splat!Freqz for its ease of use and sound quality. “Splat!Freqz sounds fit perfectly in the mix–no time wasted EQing or fiddling around trying to get them to cut through,” he said. “You literally plug them in and BAM! Good to go. Love it.”

Sideshow “Sidey” Mike Anderson from Triple M Imaging, Southern Cross Austereo in Sydney, Australia offered more praise for the creative sound design. “I’ve always been a big fan of Sound Freqz. I love the effects, they’re great for getting some real impact,” he said. “There are plenty of nice real organic elements but also a good mix of sounds that really makes your ears bleed when you wanna cut through the rock!”

Among other early believers is Ryan Drean, Creative Director at TM Studios and host of The Producers podcast. “The whole package is awesome,” said Drean. “The variety of useful elements help me bang out sweeps and stagers in bulk. Great for multiple formats too! VERY Solid!”

Created to provide an affordable, high-quality option for radio stations and freelance producers, the project collaboration was conceived by Dave Marsh, President of Splat! Radio Imaging. “For years imaging producers have been asking us to create a fun and focused buyout package like this. Now is the perfect time, and SoundFreqz were the perfect partners for us,” he said. “The sound design really stands out as unique in the market. This collaboration has been a blast, you can hear the results in the package!”

Joe D’Agostin, Owner of SoundFreqz Sound Design says “It can be a challenge creating something compelling for users. The imaging landscape is really changing and there are a lot of buyout fx packages out there. We aimed to do something useful but unique,” said D’Agostin. “Producers want fx that sound amazing and make their work easier. I consciously try to produce packages that have a well-rounded array of contrast between the elements, which differ sonically and are functional! I feel that this offers more value and variety. Users are also looking for quality and reliability, so it is a big plus for them to know and trust the brands – Splat! and Sound Freqz. It’s a match made in imaging heaven.”

Splat!Freqz Audio Imaging FX is available for a one-time buyout license and can be purchased now at prodfx.com
