TM Studios Perfect Music for WLYF

WLYF Perfect Music from TM StudiosWLYF Miami had just syndicated the Perfect Music, an AC jingle package from TM Studios. “When we heard the package, we knew we wanted it”, Rob Sidney, Lite FM, Miami.

Fresh from their latest jingle package — South Beach Deco, WLYF Lite FM Miami teamed up again with TM Studios, this time, to re-engineer the successful Perfect Music package for their station.

PD Rob Sidney says, “As well as buying custom packages from the team at TM Studios, I love ramaging through their shelves and picking other jingles that will sound great on our station. When we heard Perfect Music, we knew we wanted it. But could the TM Studios team make it work with our musical logo, and could they fit our trademark ‘ding’ into each jingle? Of course they could!”

Chris Stevens, TM Studios Creative Director stated at Jinglemad.com that the task meant taking the original cuts, extend some jingles, re-plan the vocals to accomodate solo sings, and incorporate the signature “ding” sound on all the cuts.

“We were really pleased with the way the cuts came out.” Much of the credit goes to TM’s Director of Music, Greg Clancy. He was given the task of ensuring that the specific Lite FM melody (and ding!) could work.  Also, our chief engineer worked on the cuts to make sure that they would work with the new lyrics.

We really enjoy working on projects like this – our aim is to make sure that every client gets the best possible audio for their station, and we’re always thrilled when it works out as well as this!”, Chris Stevens adds.

Listen to the WLYF Perfect Music now. The WLYF resing of the Perfect Music will be added soon on the TM Studios website.

Q92.9 Pittsburgh are airing a custom package from JAM for the last few months. WLTE in Minneapolis are also using the same package.

WLTE uses a slightly different version of the same package.

“We actually recorded two versions of each jingle at the same time, to better accomodate different logo phrasings. Pittsburgh sings “Q — 92.9″ whereas Minneapolis sings “102.9 Lite — FM”.

At this moment, the package does not have an official name or a final demo. When it does, it will appear on our site.” – Jonathan Wolfert, JAM

Here are 4 cuts from the JAM custom for Q92.9, Pittsburgh – 2 ramps, a transition and a top of the hour.

How to Localize Your Radio Station Imaging

How To Localize Your Radio Station ImagingWhat does it take to localize your radio station imaging? The radio imaging world nowadays is packed with plug and play services which give you plenty of convenience. It allows any small market station to SOUND LIKE those big guys, without having to spend too much time on the production room.

However, the comfort of fully depending on subscription based imaging services deprives the station to sound local. More often than not, imaging directors rely on pre-produced sweepers, which are good for those quick jobs, but don’t necessarily say MUCH about the personality of the station.

This is where localizing comes into play. The idea is to infuse a native flavor into your production. Now, the first thing that comes to mind about this subject is integrating the city of license with your station IDs, which is very common.

You hear radio stations that go with slogans like “Evanston’s Easy Rock”, “New York’s Hit Music”, and there are those that brand their stations alongside the city of license, like “Metro Manila’s 99.5 RT”.

Evanston’s Easy Rock (WLIT 2005 Resing, ReelWorld)
Download audio file (EasyRock.mp3)

This is the first step in localizing your station sound. But, this is only one of the many ways, which basically implies that you don’t need to add a “city” beside your station’s slogan or call sign.

Let’s use an illustration. We’ll take for example the imaging for KKWF, 100.7 The Wolf in Seattle. They had this copy for one of their station promos.

“The New 100.7 The Wolf, delivering so much fresh country we have to widen 95, yeah, all that construction in Tacoma, eh, sorry about that. It’s another no talk triple play, coming through, (jingle) The Wolf.”

KKWF Tacoma Hi-Way Promo (Jingles by IQ Beats)
Download audio file (KKWF.mp3)

Mentioning the place Tacoma does not necessarily qualify this one as a localized ID. But having to mention a recent major highway widening and associate that with “delivering so much fresh country” is just very LOCAL!

The idea is to take a major happening or a recent event in your locale and incorporate that with your imaging, that is localizing! Take anything that is synonymous to your market, it can be yearly Mardi Gras, a delicacy, prominent personalities, anything that is local.

Another example here, a morning show ID for WLYF morning show personality Susan Wise.

“… the only thing bigger than a Category 4 hurricane is Susan’s hair, (jingle)…Susan Wise 101.5 Lite FM”

Susan Wise Morning Show ID (Jingles from JAM Creative Productions)
Download audio file (WLYF.mp3)

WLYF’s market in southern United States experiences extreme weather conditions, and what better way to metaphorically introduce morning show host Susan Wise, than to compare her hair with a category 4 hurricane.

Both examples are sprinkled with a dash of humor, which most producers agree, is an effective ingredient in increasing listener retention.

The very purpose of adding a local touch to your radio imaging is to make your listeners feel at home with your station. When they know the station they are listening to identifies with them, knows what’s happening around them, it makes them STICK.

Plug and play production services are very helpful. They are just one of the many ways you can improve the sound of your station. But don’t just rely on them. Be creative with your copy. Don’t just mention your city of license and go yell “we are planet Earth’s best music station”. To localize your station sound means to sound, and feel local, to add humor, and, above all, to be creative.

What’s The Most Effective Length for a Sweeper

$

What Is The Most Effective Length for a SweeperClients always want value for their money. And more often than not producers/VO guys face tremendous challenges from radio stations who want to fit in as much information on a 30-second radio commercial, promo or a 10-second sweeper.

Enda Caldwell, our interviewee, has gone a long way since his humble beginnings as a presenter on Irish pirate radio – Kiss 106 Dundalk. Today, he has become a favorite voice of top-level clients like IP Luxemboug Advertising Agency, TM Studios,  and Dublin’s FM104.

So what is the most effective length for a radio sweeper? Enda took some time with RadioJingles.co.nr to give us some insights, and tells us the importance of radio and VO guy/producer coordination.

Does your client provide you the script or copy or do you usually do the writing most of the time?

I often start with a blank page on some projects and just let my creative juices flow. With stations like say FM104 in Dublin they have a specific style of script for The Download Chart so I follow their script on that project. With many start-up stations or new clients they come to me for ideas and it’s a 50/50 thing. I have lots of writing experience and I love words and language so it’s a part of the process I really enjoy… especially when you hear the finished product or liner on the air.

When it comes to imaging and promos, is keeping the length of a promo or sweeper shorter always an important matter to consider?

It depends – sometimes for certain openers and promos it is important to keep things longer as that is what is required. Very often “length” is not the overall consideration on my mind. What is more important to me is to say what needs to be said to get the most / best meaning across using the fewest or most effective words possible. If you talk to anyone in imaging like Dave Foxx at Z100 or Matt Lomax at Kiss 100 they will tell you that duration is not always the most important consideration when making any liner, promo or sweeper. There are times when creating a teaser that is like 10 secs long where you will deliberately make it even shorter than 10 secs for even greater teasing effect..

Well, it all depends on the copy or idea or the selling point you’d like to convey, but what is the best and most effective time length for a sweeper, 15 seconds , 10 seconds?

I would say that in the old days it was 15 seconds but nowadays it seems that the trend is more “real” sounding stuff that is shorter so in effect the part where people used to insert a simpsons drop or other “quirky” movie quote is becoming less and less frequent and people are going for a less contrived and more “this is now” style of liner.

As a voiceover imaging guy, do you agree that a station should have a consistent voice guy to do all the promos and IDs? Why?

I like the idea of three voices. That is where you have your main male deep (let’s say US) voice, then someone more lighter and more youthful in tone like myself as a shadow voice – giving the deeper voice even more authority as the light and shade type thing works. WPLJ New York did this to great effect using Chris Corley and Sandy Thomas for the Totally 80’s weekend liners and promos The third voice I would use is a female, not necessarily a US voice either but rather someone like Georgia Cubbon from New Zealand who is just awesome and is one of the true rising international radio voice imaging stars having been voicing ZM Network in her native country and now based in Sydney doing stuff for stations like 2Day FM. I would rotate all three voices and keep one as the main theme voice with the other two as shadow voices depending on the format and style of station sound.

Does it ever happen to you that you voiced 2 different radio stations in the same market? What did you do to make sure that each client gets a unique approach and sound? Because the tendency here is that when listeners hear your voice in one station, they’d associate your voice to that station, which makes it complex if you are heard on 2 stations.

I try and voice only one station in the same market. What a fast way to lose work voicing two stations in the same market!? The only exceptions are where I am the voice of FM104’s Download Chart and I asked them permssion to do some charity voice work or freebies for temporary licence stations like The 90s Network and Christmas FM. I try and keep a county apart with all the stations I voice so that there is no voice conflict.

If a radio station asks you to re-image their station this year, new liners, new top of hour, new promos and everything, what is the first thing that you will ask from the program director?

What delivery style do you want from me? I recently added a new CHR station where I am station image voice (male) and this was the first question I asked. It’s important that the client feels you have a feeling for the sound they want. You are their voice on the air really, delivering their words and messages to their listeners.

So Why Did You Choose Radio?

Because it’s the best job in the world playing records, using that natural Irish “gift of the gab”(hey, they even pay him for it!). Bingles from PURE Jingles

3FM has been around the whole 10 years of VHU’s existence(PURE Jingles). VHU began in the home of Huizinga and Diederick. It literally grew within a few years into what it is now. Check the complete story in this article.

Although Diederick is now director of VHU, he remains enthusiastic of what it all started with… the jingle! So two weeks ago the speakers at 3FM were at full strength, and he left everyone at the station with a grin from ear to ear after hearing something new: the ‘bingle’!

It is a piece of audio between a jingle and a sweeper inside. They are intended to start before a song with a solid intro

It’s been months since 96.3 WRock has re-branded to Easy Rock, but the buzz about its ReelWorld jingles is still as loud as it was. The new Easy Rock jingles, which were resings of the Delilah package, replaced the long running TM Century jingles of WRock, lifted from the original K-Lite packages.

Meanwhile, MBC continues to roar as the king of Philippine Radio. It’s flagship station for FM, Love Radio bagged home the no. 1 spot in the ratings game for a record-holding 6 years in a row. MBC Execs rewarded the station with a spanking new CHR jingle from ReelWorld (KIIS Suite).

From the Philippines to Thailand, Max 103 FM also got new jingles. Max 103 recently transferred to a new frequency and they went to ReelWorld for their jingles. Guess which package this is taken from.

For the fourth year in a row, WLYF Miami – 101.5 Lite FM – is airing new custom jingles from TM Studios in Dallas.

Their latest package, titled “South Beach Cuatro” consists of eight new tracks, each written to match the sound of Lite FM’s playlist, and supplied with multiple different mixes and versions.

Programme Director Rob Sidney is delighted with his latest audio:

“The jingles are masterpieces – a beautiful representation of the sound of LITE FM today. And the alternate mixes are just what we had in mind – a delicate “shotgun” approach for today’s lightning-quick world of PPM measurement, where every between-song element has to be memorable but efficient.”

“I’m looking forward to introducing these jingles over the next couple weeks. Incredible work, proving once again why TM’s our house!”

The jingles were recorded across three days in early August. Composed by Greg Clancy and produced in Studio A at TM Studios in Dallas, the cuts feature some of the finest musicians and vocal talent in the USA. The package is immediately available for syndication, either as a standalone package or in conjunction with the three previous South Beach packages.

Werrepark Radio in Germany has been provided a new jingle package by TM Europe.

After airing Kissville since 2008, they changed to the full Viking FM package.

The package perfectly fits the music that is played on Werrepark Radio. The package has a very clear logo and lots of different mix outs. Each theme has a ramp, slogan, ID and shotgun mixes. And on top of that al the ramp jingles come with extra acoustic versions and lots of mix outs.

Rebranding as Music FM with the help of PURE Jingles

Earlier in 2010 , PURE Jingles produced a JingleBox package for the Romanian station Radio Info Pro. Now, in 2011 , the station decided to rebrand itself as Music FM but wanted to keep some of the feel of the original package.

In discussions with the station it became obvious that the new Music FM was more music driven and targeting a Soft AC audience. To set the package apart from its earlier incarnation, the logo and slogan positions were switched (“Music FM – Just Music”) and the vocals were sung more smoothly. To give the station more material to work with, the entire package was also delivered in a lite mix-out version.

/About Music FM
Music FM broadcasts to the city of Bucharest in Romania and plays a mix of softer hits from the last 30 years. Listen to Music FM by surfing to www.music-fm.ro.

/About the PURE JingleBox
PURE Jingles created the JingleBox to give stations with smaller budgets a chance to get practically a ‘custom’ experience for the price of a resing. Clients can choose from more than 300 jingle themes, match all of them up with their preferred logo and go on air sounding completely unique. The JingleBox themes were originally composed for stations such as NRJ (France), Radio Regenbogen (Germany), Europa Plus (Russia) and 3FM (Netherlands).
